Why do leaches sometimes secrete a pain killer in their prey?

wilbur was here asked:

I know that they use their suckers to facilitate predatory behavior. They drain fluids and consume invertebrates.
But my question is: Why do they need to secrete a “pain killer” into their prey. My guess is that it make the prey easier to capture and consume.

Leaches and other parasitic organisms often secrete analgesics to prevent the prey from removing them, allowing them to feed longer. They also very often secrete antibiotics, so that the prey doesn’t die of infection.

  2. lots of animals have the ability to brush off a leech once its attached, so by releasing a pain killer, the animal wont feel that the leech is there, and it can continue to feed off its prey. It just evolved that way.
